Greg: I downloaded “Perfect Pillow” for iPad2, but the “Read to Me” btn does not work. I downloaded for my wife’s iPad2 with same result. May want to check this as others may have the same issue. I’m trying to do my first childrens book as well. I teach kinder along with my wife. Just got into KWIK, but having problems with syncing my text with audio, got any tips? Cheers! – John

      Hi John,

I apologize that you are having difficulties with The Perfect Pillow. The only occurrence I have heard that is similar was a girl thought the read to me narration didn’t work, but she didn’t notice her mute button had been accidentally switched on her iPad. There will be an update coming out to the Apple App Store that involves the read to me function, so hopefully it will fix your issue. From what I have heard, it is now taking Apple about 12 days to approve new apps and updates so it might be available by the end of this week or the beginning of next.

As for Kwik, I’m assuming you are using Kwik 1, not the Kwik 2.0 beta. For text and audio syncing, I use the sound recording software “Audacity”, which is free. I record the narration in there and then select a portion of the sound wave, press the spacebar to preview what it says and then cmd+B (ctrl+B) to bring up a new label. I then type the word that is spoke exactly as it is written in the book. So if the line reads. “I am happy.”, she said. The first word I select and label in Audacity would be written as “I

Then I export the audio as mp3 format and export the labels as a txt document, named accordingly like “page1.txt”

In Kwik, I create a new text layer of the narrative text, select all of the words, then change the color. Even if it is already set as the color you want it to be, open up the colors palette and change it again, for some reason Kwik occasionally has issues with text syncing colors. Then import you page mp3 audio, set as read to me, play one time, not when page starts (or it will play regardless if read to me was selected or not). Select the text layer, sync text with audio, import Audacity txt file and sync to page mp3 and export.

I’m pretty sure those are the correct steps, but I’m not at my computer right now so I can’t be positive. My wife just had a baby, so I’m confined to a hospital room and an iPad for awhile.

Check the mute switch, or even try rebooting the iPad for The Perfect Pillow sound issue. If that still fails, hopefully you’ll be getting a notification for an update soon and that will solve the issue for you and your wife.

Any other questions and I’ll be sure to try to help you as soon as I can.

      -Greg

Hi Greg: Thanks for your quick reply! I discovered it was the mute switch…DUH! Congrats on your new baby! Thanks for the steps; I just followed them best I could, but still not working. I’m making just three pages: title, pg1 and pg2, with text layer on pages 1 & 2. When you said “Then import your page mp3 audio, set as “read to me”, play one time, not when page starts (or it will play regardless if read to me was selected or not).” I’m not seeing the place where I tell it to play once. Do I go to “Interactions” menu to do this or the “Tool Box” menu? Also not sure on how you “Then select the text layer, “sync text with audio”, am I adding a button for this action? And on “Then import the Audacity txt file and sync to page mp3 and export.” I tried to put all that on the components section of the text layer, but I don’t know what you mean by “export”. What and how do you export? Or did you mean preview…render project to see in the Corona Simulator. Sorry for all these newbie questions, but very frustrating and Alex’s manual isn’t much help. I use Photoshop CS6 and Audacity and on a Macbook Pro. Thanks and enjoy your new baby girl!!! ~ John (-:)

Hi Greg: I just downloaded your update in iTunes and your text and audio sync work great! I tried again, unsuccessfully, to follow your steps but still cannot get my text and audio to sync. Is there a way for me to send you my zip file so you can take a quick look to see what I’m doing wrong? I would really appreciate any help. Thanks and you and your wife are enjoying your new baby! ~ John (-:)

    Hey John,

I meant to get back to you sooner, but things have been hectic here in the past week. Feel free to send me your .zip file and I’ll look at it as soon as I can. GregPugh(at)GPAnimations(dot)com
